Uses for Plywood

PLYWOOD

Plywood for cyclone season_Facebook-01-LR600

Cyclone Ply

You can use many type of ply for covering windows or other areas around you house or shop if a Cyclone is coming.  The main thing you need to consider is a thin ply will not stop flying objects,  we recommend a minimum of 12mm ply  and do not use low grade ply seconds, because it is not very strong and has many internal defects.

17mm ply and thicker sheets are strong and will give good protection in areas without much back support.

Our 12 & 15mm MAL “Exterior” grade ply will work well,  but i feel you are better to buy a 17 or 18mm Film Face for similar $ because and it will offer more protection than 12mm MAL at less $
Most plywood comes in sheets measuring 2400mm x 1200mm or 2440mm x 1220mm.

IMPORTANT  get you ply before the cyclone is upon us, so you can cut to size for windows and doors before cyclone arrives.

You can now install it quickly and safely in the rain with a cordless drill, no need to have 240v power tools.

Flooring Plywood in shop

Flooring Plywood

All flooring ply is normally made with a Tongue and Groove (T&G) on the long 2400mm long edge, there is a plastic filler that is used to join the sheets.

Flooring comes in many grades but generally the thinnest sheet is 15mm and is normally installed at 480mm centres over the supports when used in normal housing situations.  To make a floor feel better to walk on and stronger I recommend using 400mm for supports.  Standard ply is pine and not treated for rot or termites. You can get better ply with semi hardwood timber and a H2 veneer level treatment, so when cut or drilled you do not need to retreat edges or holes.

Flooring ply ranges in thickness from 15mm to 25mm. It is lightweight but still retains superior strength and rigidity. We also have available Hardwood Ply with a H2 glue line treatment againse termites, this glue line treatment is far superior to any envelope treatment as you can cut and drill the ply without the need to retreat the cut edges.

Instalation of Flooring plywood

Installation of
Plywood Flooring

In the above drawing you can see the correct way to install plywood flooring.  It is very important that the grooved edge must be run at 90 degrees to the timber or steel supports under the ply.

The diagram above is from the Plywood Association and shows the important details.  They also include the following note

Notes :
1.  The first row of panels should be laid to a string line to ensure edge straightness.
2. The face of the panel should be uppermost so the prepared face provides a smooth underlay. In standard T&G structural plywood to the brand stamp is usually on the back of the panel.
3. The end butt joints are staggered where possible in alternative rows to give a more rigid diaphragm.
4. Panels should be pushed together lightly by hand, cramping is not  recommended.

Cubby House made from Plywood

Kids Cubby

The ply used will depend on how long you want the cubby to last.  But the important thing is the use a good quality ply on the floor, the last thing we want is for the kids to be jumping up and down in the cubby and their foot to go through the floor.  The floor can act like a fish hook and hold their foot in a worse case.  I recommend use use a quality semi hardwood or MAL ply on the floor and coat it with Raw Linseed Oil and Turps every year, (ask us for details of what to do).  With the walls you can use a mix of quality with MAL a full exterior rated ply to our BD, CD and other grades with a full Marine grade glue.  Do not use our furniture grade because the glue is only a HMR type (highly moisture resistant) and will fail eventually when exposed to water.

If using ply on roof, i recommend MAL ply with Linseed oil coating . If using roofing iron, be careful the kids cannot cut themselves on the sharp edges.

Try to make cubby in a size so standard sheet size of 2400×1200 or 2440×1220 will work, and save you $ by reducing odd cuts and unusable offcuts..

IMPORTANT  check cubby at least once a year for timber rot or any areas that are damaged, so kids are not injured.

shed wall

Shed Walls

Many types of plywood can be used for lining a shed wall.  In the picture this is a low grade 12mm ply and you can see all the large knots.

When install ply the decision to use ply vertical or horizontal will depend on the shed construction and how you are going to fix to walls or roof.  With a stud type wall in picture you can go either way.  With the more common shed design you will normally use ply vertical.

We have a lot of guys using furniture grade seconds because of its good timber grain, which you can clear finish, or you can also paint it and get a really smooth look.

Concrete formwork formply 668999714

Plywood for Concrete

You can use either Film Face Ply or standard ply to make edges for the Concrete floor or path you are doing. Film Face Plywood is the best because of its very smooth surface.  Generally the ply strips will be 100mm, 150mm, 200mm or 300mm wide.  The thickness you use will depend on if you have straight edges or curves.  17mm and 25mm are best for straight edges with enough pegs behind to hold it.  When doing curves 12mm is better, or even thinner with tight radius curves.

All our Film Face Ply is made from eucalyptus hardwood timber with a marine glue and a Black Film overlay.

You can give the edging a rub with a oil soaked rag before poring concrete if you like, to make it easier to remove boxing after concrete cured.  Make use it is new oil, or you will leave black stain on concrete.

IMPORTANT  do not use ply seconds or very low grade plywood because it will bend or break when poring the concrete.

ply marine plywood boat

Boat Ply

Plywood manufactured with Marine “A” Bond glue is not always “Marine Ply”  most ply with marine glue is a lower grade ply at a much lower price.
There are 2 types of Marine plywood available in Australia.
There is Australian Standard AS2272  or British Standard BS1088.
All “CERTIFIED”Marine grade plywood will have a stamp on the back of the sheet with AS2272 or BS1088  Take a look at our web page with in depth information on Marine Ply  click on this link  —  https://www.multirack.com.au/marine-plywood/
British Standard BS1088  a lower quality Marine Ply and much much cheaper.
Australian Standard AS2272 , which is higher quality grade and more expensive.
Sheet Size are 2400×1200 or 2440 x 1220mm
Thicknesses  vary from 1.5mm  to 32mm

It is extremely important that if you are repairing or building a Boat and it specifies a Grade of Marine ply to use, you must use that grade, your life may depend on it if you hit a reef or object in the water.

Ply for tinny floor PA031270Large

Tinny Floor

For the tinny floor people generally use a 12mm or 15mm thick ply.  In the picture above this tinny is being fitted with a standard pine ply, although this will work, our customers have found that if you use MAL ply, a certified exterior ply made from semi hardwood veneer to AS2271, or BS1088 Marine ply with Eucalyptus Hardwood timber  you can get a better life span and the ply will stay flatter. And will all the effort to cut the ply to shape, you want it to last as long as possible.
There is little benefit in using AS2272 Certified Marine Ply because it is made from pine veneers and is more $, it will also rot faster than the BS1088 marine ply with the hardwood veneer and marine glue.

workbench plywood

Work Bench

The main consideration when making a workbench is what you are going to use it for.  This will influence the thickness of the ply used on the top.
With a handy man bench for small projects 12mm will be ok (providing you are not hammering on it)  With most benches I recommend 17mm as a minimum, and 25mm for a more serious type bench.  You may even need thicker top.  What happens when using a workbench is the top will flex under the hit from a hammer and you will get a double hit.  The strength, mass of thicker tops will stop this problem.
So make sure you have a top that is heavy and you will be much happier using your workbench.
HINT —  You can use a Black Film Face ply for the top, as it will make cleaning up much easier, and any oils will not soak into the top.

motorhomes plywood

Caravan & Motorhome
Details for Floor use

When working on a caravan or motorhome if you need to replace the floor, it is important that you use a plywood that is the same thickness as original if only doing a small repair.  If replacing a floor, or you are building a motorhome you will need to consider how critical your weight is,  in caravans and small motorhomes you are generally restricted because of the tare weight needing to be kept low.  In most occasions 12mm will be a good choice, provided the maximun spacing for supports is 600mm, and ply is supported on all sides (unlike a house floor with 2 sides only)  We recommend MAL ply, which is strong and a fully certified Australian Standard Exterior ply with Marine Glue.  you can use cheaper ply, but not do not use the really low grade ply, as it is not strong and uses low grade timber in construction, it will normally rot & fail.
With larger motorhomes you can use 15 or 18mm Mal ply, where tare weight is less critical. This will make a better floor.
IMPORTANT — Any where the plywood is exposed to water splashing from underside, it is important to paint the ply.

plywood horse float

Horse Float

With plywood used in a horse float, you CANNOT use plywood on the floor or ramp as the sole support.  If used as flooring you must have a steel or aluminum sheet under ply to take the weight, then use a cheaper 12mm sheet as a cover to protect the horses foot.
The reason for this is the horse urine melts the marine glue that glues the timber veneers, and after a while the ply will break down.

With the side walls, it is ok to use plywood.  You can use a variety of ply from middle quality to high grade MAL ply.  There is no value in using the expensive Certified Marine Ply, it will not offer any real benefit, except a good looking appearance.

If your application is not listed above please contact our team and they will be happy to help identify the right plywood for your job.
